Volunteer program to help rebuild a school in Kenya

Dear visitor,

Stewart Monk, our Oracle colleague, is leaving the UK soon to participate in a one week volunteer program to help rebuild a school in Kenya. It is for the Masai tribe children who live in the African bush. They are bright kids who score well nationally but the school is in a total state of disrepair.

He explains us that his manual skills are terrible - He once bought something from IKEA and then paid someone to put it together :)

However, once he started to read about the day to day lives of the kids he felt compelled to do something. Aside from the obvious dangers of poverty; there is the risk of physical and sexual abuse as a result of forced childhood marriage, female circumcision, and HIV/AIDS. At least 20 of the children are orphans requiring full time care. The school offers more then the chance for an education - it is a lifeline of security.

In addition to helping out with the building, he has committed to raising money to enable the completion of works and to train the locals to maintain the school themselves. That is where he need our help. Although he has surpassed his personal goal of raising £2000, he is still short of the £35000 required to complete the building work. Your donation will go a long way in Kenya.

Stewart has a fundraising page set up with the help of Virgin who are sponsoring the flights that can be accessed here. The web site requires donations be made in GBP so keep in mind the current exchange rate from the Euro is 0.80. You also need to input the amount in four digits, e.g 10.00. If you would like to find out more about the school, information is at Sekenani School.

Thank you. Good luck Stewart!

  2. A message received from Stewart today: “Excuse the blind copy on this email but I wanted to say a belated thanks to everyone for supporting me with cash and/or well wishes for the recent trip to Kenya to help rebuild the Sekenani school. Together we raised a staggering $12,000! A significant contribution to meeting the overall goal of $60,000.
Let me tell you that the difference your generosity made to these kids was profound. They have been taken from sleeping on dirt floors to a brand new building with their own new beds. They have new books and new clothes. The school has solar panels which not only provide for heating and light but powers a fresh water well. For the first time these kids have proper showers and fresh drinking water.
Attached are a few photos on powerpoint (let me know if you do not have that on your computer.) I hope that they bring a smile to your face. My time there was a mix of laughter and tears - thank you all for making it possible. Please know that there are literally hundreds of kids enjoying a better quality of life, and a tiny part of Africa is much better off then it was a few short months ago because of this effort.
    Stewart”

    Congratulations Stewart!
