My french collegue Gregory Verstraeten who is working now for IBM ATS Americas and based in San Francisco produced a very interesting and useful document which is reflecting his understanding about Oracle VM on IBM hardware system x (BladeCenter) servers and storage. Gregory is describing what is “Virtualization” and why it could be interesting to virtualize applications. The complete documentation could be find below. Some other interesting links are :

I would like to benefit for this post to say that Virtualization is also available on IBM system p through LPAR and micropartitionning and on IBM system z. At the Oracle/IBM Joint Solutions Center we know several customers using Ebusiness Suite on RAC with multiple virtual partitions. When there is no real work to be performed, the hypervisor can re-allocate the processor to other applications. During the end month closing or the the daily over-night we can reallocate dynamically resource by reduce some partition and increase others. The mix of the management of the application resource and the management of the hardware resource is a winning challenge.
