We recently performed an Oracle E-Business Suite Performance test on high latency network (600 ms) at customer site. I would like to share with you here this case study, the methodology, the network monitoring and emulation software packages and the results.

Firstly, Latency is the time delay between the moment a request is initiated and the moment its first effect begins(How fast can you go). Bandwidth is the Rate of data transfer (How much parallel traffic is going through).

Following our suggestion to the customer, we conducted a performance test on the Oracle demonstration environment (ADS, available from http://adsweb.oracleads.com - Oracle employee or partner login required) from an emulated customer network configuration. The customer IT Team has measured latency on office in Switzerland (140 ms) and on remote locations in Asia (240 ms) and Africa (600ms). So we assumed for our tests a best case (140ms latency) and a worst case (600ms latency).

We emulated similar network between an Oracle Demonstration environment (ADS) located in US (http://adsweb.oracleads.com) and customer site in Switzerland with Shunra VE Desktop network simulator tool. Shunra VE Desktop is a Windows-based product that simulates a wide area network link so that we can test applications under a variety of current and potential network conditions – directly from our desktop.

We conducted navigation on the Oracle solution (Forms, HTML and WebADI interfaces) located on the Oracle Demonstration environment through the emulated network configuration. Included was one business transaction per main connection type (Forms, HTML and MS Excel-upload/download). While we were connected, we carried out some typical navigation steps in the system to see if the performance is acceptable for the customer.

The tests focused on the differences of the network environment remote offices in Asia and Africa vs. customer office in Switzerland. It is assumed that the Oracle Demonstration environment (ADS) is not built for performance test, but to show a wide range of functionality.

We went through the scripts (documented with Oracle UPK), the business users watched so that had an impression if they feel that performance is acceptable. Performance is always a very subjective impression that users have with any kind of web based applications, be it the use of Oracle Applications or with the use of Amazon.com or Ebay. This means that a feedback from the users is required for acceptance reasons, and it also has to be set into relation with web applications performance in general.

In order to make the performance experience repeatable, we recorded the test with the free Jing recorder (The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere.). We provide customer these videos.

Finally, for the customer IT team we use WireShark to analyse the network. Wireshark is one of the world’s foremost network protocol analyzer which includes Live capture and offline analysis.

Time plan suggestion for this performance test (we kept this timetable!) was the following:

10.00 - 12.00: Technical installation, technical tests and checks (”Business People” not required)

13.00 - 15.00: Business process walkthroughs: First go through the typical business processes without any latency manipulation. Then switch on additional latency and walk through the same business processes again. See the difference with and without additional latency. Tests has been recorded to produce videos delivered later

15.00 - 16.00: Acceptance discussion and conclusion

Test topology:

A video of a part of the test (.SWF/Flash format) is available below:

Experienced Results The experienced results from the customer at the end of our case study were the following:

140 ms Latency (best case):

HTML (iProcurement Requisition): Good and Acceptable

Professional User Interface (Form) with Cash Management Form: Good and Acceptable

Excel Integration (Budget Upload from MS Excel): Good and Acceptable

Amazon.com with check-out: Good and Acceptable

600 ms Latency (worst case):

HTML (iProcurement Requisition): Good and Acceptable

Professional User Interface (Form) with Cash Management Form: Perceived as relatively slow

Excel Integration (Budget Upload from MS Excel): Good and Acceptable

Amazon.com with check-out: Perceived as very slow

Case Study Conclusion

Performance is good and acceptable for 5 out of 6 connection types / latency combinations. Forms transactions (professional interfaces) are stable with a worst case latency of 600 ms, but can be perceived as relatively slow. Compared to an Amazon.com transaction in the worst case scenario, the professional user interface forms are faster. The bandwidth is not a problem at all.

So, the customer can start with a network situation like today, but needs to identify where offline functionality or HTML Input would be helpful in relevant business processes.

If you’re implementing multiple applications, you can benefit from features such as common, conformed dimensions, thereby enabling insight into complex cross-departmental relationships and business issues.

The following list shows the main changes in Oracle Business Intelligence Applications Version 7.9.4:

New Adapter for Oracle E-Business Suite R12 including pre-built content and adapters for Financials, Human Capital Management, Order Management & Fulfillment, and Supply Chain modules

Enhanced Universal Adapter to support all available Analytics Applications.

New Ledger Dimension: This dimension represents Ledger or Set of Books details and can be used to analyze many relevant measures.

New Company Dimension (Updated): With the introduction of the Ledger dimension to capture Set of Books related detail, the Company dimension represents Legal Entity (in previous releases, the Company dimension represented Set of Books detail).

11 new languages

Order Management and Fulfillment: Support for COGS (Cost of Goods Sold), Margin Analysis of ATO (Assembled To Order) Orders, COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) and Margin Analysis of PTO (Packaged To Order) Orders.

In addition, Oracle BI Suite EE Plus now natively supports Hyperion Essbase as an optimized data source. With this integration, Hyperion Essbase customers can now leverage the Oracle BI Suite EE Plus enterprise information model to enable pervasive deployment and delivery of Hyperion Essbase information across the enterprise.
